CASE STUDY 8:

Capping Layer and Drainage Trench Backfill to an Adopted Estate Road

Project Description:

6F1 Capping Layer and Drainage Trench Backfill replacement on a Hampshire County Council adopted Estate Road. Total Quantity approximately 8000 cu m in 3 visits.

Existing Ground Conditions:

Silty Clay with CBR less than or equal to 1, thus the designed capping layer depth was 600mm.

Product:

Capping Layer (6F1) material was produced ex-situ from the site won clays and deposited in trenches and in roads to achieve the prescribed targets detailed by the Specification for Highway works and those of Hampshire County Council. Before works commenced, preliminary testing was carried out and HCC approval in principle was established prior to commencement. Cost of import export per cu m was reduced from £26.00 to £15 through the employment of the Envirosoil processes, yielding a total saving on the capping layer and drainage trench fill supply works of £88,000.00p.

Benefits Accrued as a direct result of the incorporation of Envirosoil Products in the Works:
  • A Cost Saving of £80,000 was achieved directly as a result of the deployment of Envirosoil.

  • Assured quality as a result of Envirosoil’s strict and independent testing regime was essential in order to enable the adoption of the finished highway by HCC

  • The number of HGV movements were reduced from 1600 to 70. This was of particular importance as construction delivery vehicles had to access via a densely populated, large housing estate.
