CASE STUDY 7:

Piling Platform on Housing Development, Poole, Dorset

Project Description:

Piling Mat for CFA Rig inserting concrete for 600mm nominal diameter piles on an area of 8,200 sq m

Existing Ground Conditions:

Granular Made Ground, Inert, with a high moisture content, with a bearing capacity of 75kN per sq m.

Product:

The material was required to achieve bearing capacities in excess of 250kN per sq m as verified by in-situ plate bearing tests. This was achieved in all cases. Furthermore, the material modified was used as a running surface for the piling rig as well as the attendant 14t track machine and 4t dumper truck. The work was carried out in the month of December and the Works were completed in 2 weeks. The thickness of the mat was 500mm and the total quantity of stabilised material was 4,100 cu m.

Using conventional methods of construction would have required approximately £32 per cu m. Envirosoil’s rate for the works which consisted of stabilising, spreading, levelling and compacting the material to provide a finished surface amounted to £13p per cu m

Benefits Accrued as a direct result of the incorporation of Envirosoil Products in the Works:
  • A Cost Saving of £78,000 was achieved directly as a result of the deployment of Envirosoil.

  • Assured quality as a result of Envirosoil’s strict and independent testing regime was essential because the piling mat was sited next to a Railtrack branch line, and a Primary School.

  • The number of HGV movements were reduced from 820 to 20. This was of particular importance since the site was located in the town centre and access was through a congested area of the site already under construction.
